AHG Recognized in Global Advances in Health and Medicine Journal Article

Asheville, NC. The American Herbalists Guild (AHG) announces recognition in a November 2021 journal article titled “Beyond Professional Licensure: A Statement of Principle on Culturally-Responsive Healthcare.” The article in Global Advances in Health and Medicine discusses the authors’ call to action to make healthcare more culturally responsive, noting that the American Herbalists Guild is one model of a container in which this important shift is being achieved.
MODELING HEALTH EQUITY
Article authors Ijaz, Steinberg, Flaherty, Neubauer, and Thompson-Lastad discuss factors in health equity and cite AHG’s legitimizing of multiple varying pathways to the practice of healthcare. Ijaz et al call on healthcare institutions and organizations to move toward inclusive recognition and representation of healthcare practitioners whose credibility is established both inside and outside of professional licensure mechanisms.
Championing AHG as an example of a healthcare organization committed to credentialing according to high standards outside the box of mainstream medical licensure, the piece juxtaposes AHG’s approach with other “community-based recognition pathways” such as indigenous healing practitioners. The research article mentions the AHG as an example of a place in the medical landscape for unlicensed practitioners.
AHG RECOGNIZED FOR DIVERSE CREDENTIALING PATHWAYS
The article highlights AHG’s Registered Herbalist (RH) credentialing process as an example of a unique approach to accrediting healthcare practitioners. The process of applying to become an RH is unique in that it takes into account multifaceted modes of herbal practice and traditions and a diversity of professional paths. Through this method, the AHG stands out as a model of unconventional, yet high caliber, clinical accreditation.
“The AHG has made clear that while it recognizes excellence and emphasizes safety in therapeutic herbal care, its membership neither seeks professional licensure, nor aims to outlaw or marginalize non-member practitioners,” note Ijaz et al, bringing attention to the particular duality of AHG’s member base.

The AHG is committed to modeling diversity in the practice of herbalism and dedicated to honoring manifold approaches to herbalist certification, ranging from traditional indigenous models of herbalism to modern clinical phytotherapy. The Guild promotes clinical herbalism as a viable profession rooted in ethics, competency, diversity, and freedom of practice.
AHG membership encompasses several different categories, including Registered Herbalists who have documented rigorous study and clinical experience and are widely recognized for this peer-reviewed credential, as well as Associate Members who have invested significant time and energy into various careers working with medicinal plants.
